Remember: exempt purchases must be paid for by the University DIRECTLY, i.e. on the P-Card, with a U of MN purchase order, or a U of MN check. Employees cannot claim an exemption for purchases made from their personal funds, even if receiving reimbursement later.
Is there a retailer you'd like to see more information on not listed here? Let us know:

***IMPORTANT NOTES***
It is recommended that you make tax exempt purchases in person or otherwise in direct contact with a human being. Most of these accounts were initiated for in-store purchasing.
Please make sure if you are ordering items online or otherwise having them shipped that your department specific address is used for all correspondence, NOT THE ADDRESS ON THE ST3 or W9 form. The tax department will not accept deliveries to this address intended for other departments, and items such as invoices or receipts may be significantly delayed or lost entirely if delivered to this address.

Retailer Exemption Numbers
Some retailers have set up University-wide accounts you will want to reference when making tax exempt purchases. We have listed these numbers and retailers below.
Not all retailers use this method for processing tax exempt purchases - some prefer to set up separate accounts for each billing/shipping address, others process payments at the register without additional paperwork. For more information on making tax exempt purchases, please check out the Sales Tax page and this article from Dollars & Sense.
Best Buy:
Accounts are set up by billing address (separate account for each department/unit) so no University - wide account number. Please contact Nick Anderson at Best Buy in Government & Education Purchasing to set up a tax exempt account. 612-292-0368 or 1-800-224-8181 ext 60803 or email Nicholas.Anderson2@bestbuy.com
Cub Foods
Cub Foods Stores use a store - by - store system of customer account cards. Unfortunately, this system is difficult for such a large and de-centralized organization as the University of Minnesota. We recommend you bring this letter & exemption certificate with you when making purchases at Cub Foods stores in Minnesota. If they insist on creating a tax exemption card, please make sure it is sent to your specific department address, not to the address listed on the ST3 form.
Dell
Order Dell products using the University's Techmart site to shop and then a Peoplesoft "punch out" site to order them. Procedures for ordering from Dell under the new Peoplesoft system are provided here.
If you have a problem with a Dell invoice, such as being overcharged or charged sales tax in error, please contact Debra Van Buren at 1-800-766-3355 Extension 728-7205.
